The Town of Maybeury

What once was a coal mining town is now the perfect location for those who enjoy ATV riding or simply vacationing in this beautiful part of the country. The name of the town was created by two coal miners, Billy Beury and John May. Hence, the name of the town is Maybeury. With a population of 875 people, Maybeury was the largest town in McDowell County, WV, in 1890. In fact, it became the fifth largest city south of the state capitol (Charleston) and the 31st largest town in the state. This was primarily due to the new coal mining companies in the town. In 1960, John F. Kennedy visited Maybeury during his presidential primary campaign.
